OCTOBER
October 3rd Postponed
Walkway Over the Hudson
Ade is planning a trip to the Walkway Over the Hudson on Thursday, October 3, 2019. We’ll meet at the Visitor Information Center on the Poughkeepsie side at 10 am.
Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is a 19th century railroad bridge transformed into the world's longest elevated pedestrian park.
It stretches 1.28 miles between Highland and Poughkeepsie, so the entire roundtrip walk with be about 2.5 miles. It stands 212 feet above the Hudson River. We’ll get an aerial view of the neighborhoods the bridge passes over. If we’re lucky, we’ll see cargo ships, Amtrak trains, and freight trains pass under. There are indoor restrooms inside the Welcome Centers on both approaches.
I read that about 3/4 of the way across is an elevator which takes you down to the riverside. A very short walk from the walkway entrance on the Poughkeepsie side will take us directly to the Poughkeepsie Ice House where we can have lunch. The restaurant is an historic, exposed brick building with old world charm. With stamped concrete floors and 25-foot ceilings, the building is reminiscent of an earlier era. The windows frame majestic views of the Hudson River, Mid-Hudson Bridge, and Walkway Over The Hudson. Once I know how many gals are committed to going, I can make a reservation and see if they can give us separate checks.
Please let me know by September 27th if you want to join me on the trip. (adrienne.birchler@icloud.com or 518-452-0618)

OCTOBER 17th
Crane Museum of Papermaking
Ade is proposing a trip to Dalton, Massachusetts, about an hour’s drive from Albany, to the Crane Museum of Papermaking on Thursday, October 17th.
Since 1879 Crane has continuously supplied banknote paper for United States currency. Anti-counterfeiting technologies have been developed, updated and implemented by Crane since 1844. The Museum was expanded in 2001 as part of the company’s bicentennial celebration, and again in 2014 to accommodate corporate archives and create an area for hands-on papermaking and paper arts, which I participated in when I was there last year and enjoyed. The museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Crane Museum of Papermaking is located in what was the rag room of Crane’s Old Stone Mill, dating back to 1844. This was the first mill built by the second generation of Crane papermakers in Dalton, Massachusetts. The address is 32 Pioneer Street in Dalton.
Dalton, Massachusetts
Admission is free (donation suggested). However, if there are 8 or more of us, I must contact the museum in advance of our visit. The museum can be opened at alternative times for group visits for a nominal fee, but if we get there when it opens at 1:00 pm as I’m proposing, we most likely won’t have to pay anything. I’ll still need to call them to tell them of our visit.

FESTIVAL OF TREES EVENT
AT THE SCHENECTADY
HISTORICAL SOCIETY
SCHENECTADY, NY
Kim
Eruysal ,
our
new member shared a nice idea for a Glitzy Chicks event she read about that is
happening at the Schenectady Historical Society. They are hosting their annual Festival
of Trees Showcase during December 2019.
What we need to do is:
Purchase the small or tabletop artificial tree or if
anyone has one they will donate one to our chapter, that would be wonderful. We
will be also checking out garage sales for one.
Our
Tree Theme is “A Red Hat Holiday”
Pick a Date and a time that is good with everyone who
decides to partake in the setup and decorating of the tree process; also decide
on the day the Chicks plan on attending the Festival of Trees together.
In speaking with the society’s curator, Tree set up will take place
Monday, Dec 2nd Friday, Dec 6th between
the hours of 9am to 5pm.
We need to bring our own tree, stand, lights and decorations.
Our options can each chick participating will bring some decorations or one
person will purchase the decorations needed and we would decorate the tree from
those items. Another option is we can make the decorations
The trees are voted on as to which is the most creative,
decorated and best theme.
Since there is no tree raffle this year at the Festival
of Trees, our tree will be the party door prize at our annual Christmas party
at Lynn Martin’s home on December 13th.
The Festival does not end until Dec 22nd, but the tree can be picked up anytime during business hours after
the close of the Festival starting Monday, Dec 23 - Saturday Jan 7th;
Mon-Fri 9am-5pm and Sat 10-2pm. (the building will be closed 12/25 and 1/1)
If you are interested in participating in
decorating and/or attending the festival of trees and did not sign up at the dinner at Mercato's , please let Kim know. We will be meeting on November 16th at
the Whistling Kettle at 11:00 am, located on Jay Street, Schenectady, NY to go over the final details and collect and
work on the red hat holiday tree theme decorations. Please email or call Kim at cell: 844-9711
or keruysal@yahoo.com
In closing, after the festival of trees in December, we
will enjoy lunch at the Whistling Kettle on Jay Street for those of you who
want to continue on this already holiday festive and fun day.
