Words to Ponder
Groundhog Day—Feb. 2—is based on a German superstition. In Germany, though, it’s not a groundhog that forecasts either an early spring or a longer winter: It’s a badger.
Valentine’s Day did not start on a romantic note. According to historians, the day now synonymous with “love” probably began as a pagan fertility festival in ancient Rome. We’ll leave it at that, because some of the other details are disturbing.
Valentine’s Day isn’t just about humans, either. Almost 9 million people in the U.S. buy their dogs gifts or cards for Valentine’s Day.
February is dedicated as Black History Month, honoring the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history, including the civil rights movement and their artistic, cultural and political achievements.
The First Black Billionaire: Before Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan joined the billionaire’s club, Robert Johnson became the first African American billionaire when he sold the cable station he founded, Black Entertainment Television (BET) in 2001.
February is recognized as National Heart Month.

Place: 336 Shirlwood Drive, Schenectady, NY 12306
Attire: Any combination of Red, White and Blue to celebrate President's week.

With a whole lot of swapping going on, Jack, our pup, won't be here but will be enjoying some time at his groomer and then on to a doggy play date.
In case, you haven't attend one, Here’s how the Wretched Excess Party works: Each person attending brings up to five (5) items she no longer wants. Items can be clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, home goods, and red and/or black hat items are welcome. The items must be in good to excellent condition and usable; i.e. no junk! We will have a lottery where each gal will draw the same number of tickets as the number of items she brought. Tickets will be numbered and gals will “shop” according to the numbers on their tickets. Please note, If you have more items that you want to bring over the 5 items for the lottery game, you are more than welcome to do so.
Any items that are not chosen, will be donated to the Safe House, the only registered shelter for youth in Schenectady County, that provides services to our homeless and exploited youth.
Lunch will be lite fare. Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Cherry and Apple Pie will be served as well as tea and coffee.
To add to the fun, Ade, or resident trivia expert will be getting our brains motivated with some trivia questions. Hint- brush up on your our famous February President's facts.
Please RSVP Linnie by February 10th if you are planning on attending at 518-355-3334 or 518-727-4380 or email at lmpflieger@gmail.com and let Lin know what you will be bringing to share at lunch.
